 The silent killer


According to New Scientist, the heatwave that hit Europe this summer has caused at least 35,000 deaths - and worse may be to come, warn environmentalists.

August 2003 was the hottest August on record in the northern hemisphere. But projections by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predict more erratic weather, the EPI notes. By the end of this century, the average world temperature is projected to climb by 1.4 to 5.8°C.

And at the same time, Russia drags its feets on climate change (according to Greenpeace).

To date, 119 States have ratified, accepted, or acceded to Kyoto. Of the 37 industrialized countries who agreed emissions targets under Kyoto, only 5 have not yet ratified:
