 My PostFix Setup

If you used sendmail in Jaguar, you'll notice that Panther replaced it with postfix. Actually, sendmail appears to be still present, but in fact now it's just a stub that redirects everything to postfix for backwards compatibility (see 'man sendmail').

I was using sendmail in Jaguar mostly to get emailed the output of my cron tasks, and here's how I set up postfix to achieve the same result in Panther.

I've tried all you have listed here. I had some ownership problems with users and groups. Once those were corrected, I could fire up postfix and it came up with no error messages (returning postfix/postfix-script: starting the Postfix mail system). BUT....when I try and access SMTP I'm bumped out with this message:

Trying [my static ip address is here]...

telnet: connect to address [my static ip address is here]: Connection refused

telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

Is there some setting I have to change? Does postfix block incoming SMTP access by default? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes it does.

Try <a href="http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031025022626398&query=postfix">this tip from MacOSXHints</a>. Or see <a href="http://www.postfix.org/">the Postfix site</a>.
