According to this BBC story, fixed GPS stations show the UK is moving 2-3 cm each year in a north-easterly direction (no, they're not trying to annex Sweden, this is caused by the rotation of the Eurasian continental plate).

Anyway, the point of this story is that GPS, primarily designed for the military and navigators, is now being used in ways its creators may never have imagined, such as predicting storms, measuring sea levels and monitoring continental drift.
